My name is Patrick German. I am a 21 year old international volunteer. Having spent two years travelling on GAP year programs, I am now looking at my next venture which is going to Ghana for four months volunteering with the local organisation CPYWD.
In my two years away from school, I joined two GAP year programs. One of which is a youth leadership training program, and the other Youth Service Initiative, a full time volunteer program based in the Netherlands. Both programs included an international service project, one in Cote d’Ivoire and the second in Ghana. It was in this second trip in Ghana, lasting just under three weeks, that I decided to come back for a longer stay.
I am not expecting a comfortable stay in Ghana; January to May are the hottest and most uncomfortable times of year in Tamale, Northern Ghana, where I will be staying. However I do expect an enriching experience. Africa is one of the final frontiers of this world as nations are still developing, and the experience I gain here will hopefully help me as I look into careers in the field of International Developent and NGO work in the future.
